History of the Brethren-Baptist Church United
In 1903, eight families came to Sunnyslope and started the first Church of the Brethren in this Valley.
The East Wenatchee Church was organized in 1908 and a Wenatchee Church was organized in 1920. In 1922 these two churches consolidated and the present building was started.
In 1924, meetings were held in the new basement until 1929, when the main building was completed.
The church was extensively remodeled in 1969 and in 1970, the Immanuel Baptist Church (an American Baptist Congregation) joined with the Brethren to form “Wenatchee Brethren-Baptist Church United.”
During WWII, the government allowed for Conscientious Objectors (C.O.’s) who did not want to carry guns or actively participate in the military. They served in civilian projects where help was needed; in the army as non-combatants and as assistants to the medical teams. After the war, a lot of these same people went to Europe and Southeast Asia to help with refugee resettlement as well as the rebuilding of these countries.
Out of this came our active Outreach Ministries, such as the Agriculture Exchange program between Poland and Japan. In the 1960’s, all of these things became the inspiration for the beginning of the Peace Corps.
Currently, the Brethren-Baptist Congregation provides major support for missions and local mission ministries, such as:
In addition, many Alcoholics, Al-Anon, & Narcotics Anonymous support groups meet in the church building. We also have Christian Faith of the Gospel, a Ukrainian Congregation that has been meeting at Brethren-Baptist Church since January, 1993.
